Academy Sports and Outdoors has chosen plus-size Instagram fashion model Anna O’Brien as the new face of their ‘BCG’ line, which runs up to size 3X for women.
The New York-based O’Brien has struggled with maintaining a fitness regime herself over the years, and blames some of the anxiety she felt towards working out on a lack of available and affordable wear in her size. “This single challenge is one of the greatest barriers to plus-size women becoming active,” she wrote for Academy’s Instagram page. Though O’Brien rocked a sporty photoshoot that has now attracted more than 13 thousand likes, not everyone watching had something nice to say.
One wrote: “People should be ashamed of being fat not proud”.
But the fitness brand kept to their word about representing a range of body types and quickly shot back:
At Academy, we truly believe every woman should have the same opportunity to enjoy sports and the outdoors.
As a result, we will continue to represent a wide range of body types. We’re all different, but our access to an active lifestyle shouldn’t be.
I am so excited to be partnering with @Academy on the launch of their new plus size activewear BCG Plus. Let’s quickly talk about why this is so important. For many people when starting a fitness journey, a sporting goods store is the first place they think to buy workout gear. Imagine what happens when a plus size woman does just that, and finds nothing in her size? An opportunity to find joy in movement is lost. I am so happy Academy recognized this need and is now providing affordable plus options in store and online at academy.com. To celebrate on Monday, November 20th, I’ll be taking over @Academy on Instagram and sharing some of my favorite looks from the new collection. I’ll also be answering your questions on fit, how to get started moving, and well- just about anything. See you there! #fitness #plussize #fitspo #plussizefitness #psblogger #ad #training #workout
