Scientists have created a new male contraceptive that makes sperm unable to swim.
Men will be able to take a pill, or use a nasal spray, which will render them infertile for a few days, according to the Mail on Sunday.
The fast-acting contraceptive could be taken just minutes before sex, according to researchers at Wolverhampton University, who created the cell-penetrating peptide compound with Portuguese scientists.
It works by smuggling itself into sperm and then stopping them from swimming, which makes them unable to fertilise eggs.
‘The results are startling – and almost instant. When you take healthy sperm and add our compound, within a few minutes the sperm basically cannot move,’ said Professor John Howl, who is heading up the project.
The male pill is still in the testing stage but if everything goes to plan it could be available by 2021.
