Even though many people love the animated series Big Mouth for its edgy and sometimes controversial comedy, some fans have accused a new clip of pan-phobia, trans-phobia, and bi-phobia. One of the show’s co-creators has since come out to admit that “they missed the mark”.
The clip sees the introduction of a new student Ali, voiced by actor and comedian Ali Wong. Ali is asked by teacher Ms Benitez to introduce herself, and she says that she plays soccer, she’s a Ravenclaw, and, “not to make all you normies s*** your Old Navy undies”, she’s pansexual.
Nick then asks her to explain further, and Ali explains that pansexual means that she’s into boys, girls, and everyone in between. When Nick says that he thought that was bi, Ali rolls her eyes and says that “bisexuality is so binary”.
She adds that being pansexual means that her preference is not limited by gender identity.
She continues by saying that it’s like some of them like tacos, and some like burritos. If you’re bi, you like tacos and burritos. However, she likes tacos and burritos and she could be into a taco that was born a burrito, or a burrito that is transitioning into a taco.
The clip was since shared on Twitter, and many people commented that not only it is bi-phobic, trans-phobic, pan-phobic, but the show has made this weird image where pansexuality is seen as morally higher than bisexuality.
To add to that, everyone in the room treated the term ‘pansexual’ as a dirty word.
Andrew Golberg, the co-creator of the show, has since apologized for making people feel misrepresented and agreed that the team could have “done better” with the clip.
