A Muslim woman has been kicked out of a public swimming pool because she was a burkini, the Islamic swimwear.
The burkini covers women’s bodies in full, and the woman was with her children at West Wave pool in Henderson, Auckland, Australia on Saturday morning when the incident took place.
A witness has since said that the mother was approached by a lifeguard and was asked to leave for breaching the pool’s policy when it comes to swimwear.
The woman had her kids with her and she was supervising them with another woman. However, when one of the women went into the pool with the kids, the lifeguard approached the woman that was sitting next to the pool and asked her to leave.
The woman told the New Zealand Herald that it felt very public and very singled out. A man in the pool tried to talk to the lifeguard, and it was very upsetting to see.
A witness also claimed that the lifeguard was laughing over his walkie-talkie while asking the woman to leave.
Jane Aickin from Aucklang Council apologized and said that the woman should not have been made to leave.
She said that all swimwear is allowed at Auckland Council pools, and the customers should feel free to wear any swimwear they’re comfortable in, without any judgment.
However, she noted that their investigation found no evidence that anyone was asked to leave the pools.
